Some of the potential long term effects of contracting an STI are:

If you are pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant, knowing if you have an STI is even more important. The infection puts your baby at risk for low birth weight, ectopic pregnancy, illness, blindness, birth defects, miscarriage, or newborn death. These complications can be avoided by receiving proper treatment for your STI prior to becoming pregnant. Even for STIs that cannot be cured, proper management can help prevent these things from happening. There are medications and preventative measures that can be taken.
